What will you do?

Help us build the control systems that make renewable energy reliable. The energy transition depends on more than just generating renewable power. It requires smart, reliable systems to store and control it. As an Application PLC Engineer, you design and build the control software that enables advanced flywheel and battery energy storage systems (FESS/BESS) to operate safely, efficiently, and in sync with real-world grid conditions. Every system you work on helps stabilize grids and unlock more renewable energy. You’ll work on complex, first-of-a-kind systems where standard solutions don’t exist yet.

From day one, you’ll take ownership of the control layer that brings our energy storage systems to life. You start by understanding how the system should behave, both internally and from the customer’s perspective. How should a flywheel and battery work together under dynamic grid conditions? How do you balance performance, safety, and reliability? You translate these questions into concrete control strategies. From there, you bring the system to life by developing PLC software and ensuring all parts of the system work together as one integrated whole. Your responsibilities center around:

  • Designing and implementing control strategies
  • Developing and maintaining PLC software for system behavior and safety
  • Integrating control with mechanical, electrical, and software components
  • Translating customer requirements into robust, working solutions

As the system takes shape, you validate and improve it. You test components and full systems and you support commissioning on-site, and fine-tune performance in real-world conditions At the same time, you look beyond individual projects. You will:

  • Identify patterns, improve reusability, and help define how systems should be built going forward
  • Play an active role in standardizing control design as we scale further
  • Manage and document changes, and contribute to standardization as systems evolve.

Why this role is so interesting?
You work on first-of-a-kind energy systems, not standard machines. You own how the system behaves, not just a piece of code. Together with the whole team you close the loop between design and reality. Everything you build is designed to perform in demanding industrial and grid-connected environments where it truly matters like construction sites or ports. While doing so you contribute to accelerating the energy transition and the elimination of the use of fossil fuels.

Who are we looking for?
An engineer who takes ownership and enjoys solving real-world problems. You’re proactive, pragmatic, and comfortable making decisions and prioritizing in a dynamic, fast iterating environment. You like to take initiative, but you don’t need everything to be perfect before you start. You’re hands-on when needed and understand that practical experience is often the fastest way to learn and improve a system. You combine a solid theoretical foundation with a practical mindset. You enjoy translating a technical challenge from a customer into a well-functioning system. That might mean diving into control loops, understanding system behavior, and iterating on different control strategies until it works as intended. This isn’t always straightforward or “by the book” and that’s exactly what you enjoy. You’re comfortable working on problems where no standard solution exists (yet). Above all, you enjoy the combination of thinking, building, testing, and improving and seeing your work perform in the real world.

  • Casual working environment in an international and close team of engineers
  • Just a 5-minute walk from and to the Culemborg train station

What will you bring?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Systems & Control, or similar
  • At least 3+ years of programming experience in industrial environments
  • Hands-on experience with Codesys-based PLC-programming
  • Experience with control systems (e.g. control loops, system dynamics)
  • Experience with JIRA or similar tooling in a development environment
  • As part of our international team your English is fluent (Dutch is considered a plus)
  • Experience in standardization efforts is considered a strong plus
  • Experience in hands-on engineering projects (e.g. solar teams, robotics, personal builds) is a tremendous plus

Working at QuinteQ Energy

Good to know

Founded in 2019 QuinteQ Energy is an innovative technology company based in Culemborg that specializes in energy storage. With their advanced flywheel systems, they temporarily store electricity and return it at lightning speed during peak load. In doing so, they help companies and infrastructure use energy more efficiently, reduce grid congestion, and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.

QuinteQ Energy is actively building the future of their technology. For this vacancy, they are working exclusively with Goodfinders. We guide you through the process, but from day one you will be part of the QuinteQ Energy team if you are the innovative engineer we are looking for.
